The Asian Koel is a bird of light woodland and cultivation. It is a mainly resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from India and Sri Lanka to south China and the Greater Sundas. A female Asian Koel clicked in the backyard. It is a mainly resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to south China and the Greater Sundas. They have great potential in colonizing new areas. This shot was clicked with the bird in front of a moldy wall.

Looks like the shy coucals are getting friendly with me. Got another bunch of clean shots of this rather large and shy bird. A usually difficult task. In India the bird is known as Bharadwaj (also known as ratna-pakshi "jewel bird" in southern India). Sighting one is considered to be auspicious. In British India, it was noted that new-recruits to India often mistook it for a pheasant and shot it to find it "evil flavoured" giving it the nickname of "Griff's pheasant".

Was running up the staircase when I saw this fellow, through the window, on the coconut tree growing in the backyard. It was very cloudy and so I had to be steady with the camera. This was clicked when it detected me, though being dark it may not have seen me clearly. These are large birds at 48 cm. whose heads are black, upper mantle and underside black glossed with purple. Back and wings are chestnut brown and eyes ruby red. Diet consists of a wide range of insects, caterpillars and small vertebrates including snakes. I have seen one with a snake in its beak. I don't see them often though I hear their booming low cry virtually every day.

More artistic than illustrative. A nice look at the crimson eye of the Greater Coucal, a large non-parasitic member of the cuckoo order of birds, the Cuculiformes. They are weak fliers, and are often seen clambering about in vegetation or walking on the ground as they forage for insects, eggs and nestlings of other birds.
