A superb example of early 20th century homes in downtown Sacramento, California. The stairs leading up to the second floor are typical of this neighborhood just a mile south of the river and levee. Much of the downtown like New Orleans is below sea level and the town was vulnerable to floods during years of heavy rainfall and heavy Sierra snow melts. This house is about a mile from the Capitol mall the centerpiece of the city. It is not all preserved as well as this beauty but there are large blocks with oak tree shade that might remind you of San Francisco, Richmond, or New Orleans. If you come to town take a few downtown strolls near southside Park or McKinley Park , Land Park or Curtis Park. They have done a good job of keeping these urban neighborhoods intack with a homey small town flavor in a metropolitan are that is now over 1 million and climbing.

This giant spiderman style rabbit or hare greets people as they fly into the new terminal at Sacramento International Airport. It is very odd public art indeed and not very representative of the city that is known for it's politics, rivers, gold rush history, rice fields and gateway to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada foothills. The older terminal has a giant stack of lost suitcases welded together so this improves on that at least. It is a nice airport to fly into with decent food and a quiet feeling compared to California's larger cities. I think perhaps a giant coyote, deer, or bear would have been more befitting but super rabbit is there to stay.

The rotunda of the state capitol building in Sacramento, California is modeled in a neoclassical style after the plan Thomas Jefferson used in Virginia and was later repeated in Washington, D.C and many other states. The beauling was built about twenty years after the gold rush period. Besides politics and lobbyists there is a lot of history inside the building and a lovely park and memorial grounds outside too. It's free to tour the building and you will likely see lot of school kids making their annual field trip here.

Enjoy a bit of living history when you visit California's state capitol. After touring the Capitol building and grounds. Take in old town just a mile away on the Riverfront. Most of the buildings even with the tourist trappings give off the flavor of life in 1850 just before the gold rush. On summer weekend enjoy free shows of Irish dancers or melodramas with period costumes from the gold rush era.
It's a great walking place. A one mile stroll takes you over the river and the city's famous bridge. Enjoy a ride on the riverboat or sit outside and feel the delta breeze at night. The most famous attraction is the train museum. After that take in Fort Sutter or drive and walk in the homes of the fabulous forties with shady streets and a neighborhood that is a preservation of building styles from 1940s, and fifties. If you come in summer stay hydrated and enjoy the air conditioning at the train museum on the 95 plus days. A great town for visitors that want to see a different side of California life.

Sacramento is not known for its urban architecture but this is a nice exception.
The city is rightly known as a place in western history and as the political center and capitol of California. This beauty was about three blocks west of the grand capitol building. It was one of those typlcal 100 degree Central Valley days as I was strolling around in the late afternoon. It seemed like an almost deserted plaza but perhaps its busy inside. I love the tinted glass which likely works not just to be pretty but to save energy and keep out a lot of the constant heat that prevails from May thru September.
I like the different texture and color of the grantite like smooth pink biege stone too.
I couldnt find someone to tell me a name to this newer building but I like the striking way it looks to the people on the street below. The sleek modern future feeling that is a contrast to the many historical buildings only a few blocks away.
